The Hawks win Gwent Dragons Competition

On Saturday night The Hawks were very lucky and got to go and watch the Dragons last match of the season (for free!). The class took part in a competition where they has to state in one paragraph why our school was the best. This was a hard task (seeing as we are such a great school) but Laura Huckbody managed it. This was her winning entry ...

Hello Mr Sage and Mr James (and of course the Dragons!) My name is Laura Jasmine Huckbody, from Deighton Primary School; Tredegar. 7 short months ago we came to visit you. We learnt a lot more about rugby and had a superb time –(not forgetting when we saw Sam Parry!) Personally I think our school is the best because; we don’t suffer from bullying, play a lot of sports and are inquisitively well behaved. If we win the signed rugby jersey it will put our school on the map and also make our school known for sports. In addition our class would also get to come back to the best trip we have ever been on (in our lives!).  I hope you choose Deighton Primary School’s year 6 to come and make you win your last match!
P.S- you know we won’t let you down J.

We had a great time watching the Dragons win their last match, and Laura was also presented with a signed t shirt for the school.
Da iawn Laura. Here are some pictures for you to enjoy!

River Trip

Last week The Hawks travelled down to the Sirhowy River to carry out some activities as part of our river project. Luckily the weather was good to us and we didn't get wet on the 3 mile walk there and back!
Down at the river we measured the speed, depth and temperature of the river and looked at the surrounding wildlife/habitats.
We had a very enjoyable day.

Hawks Star in Animation

Members of the Hawks were lucky enough to take part in an animation, based on the lives of children working in Britain during 1842.

In 1842 a Royal Commission investigated the employment of children in heavy industry -- the results shocked middle-class Britain. Children aged 8 and younger were discovered to be working in dreadful conditions. The commissioners interviewed children throughout the country, including South East Wales. In the film you will hear actual words as spoken by the children, their parents and their employers. The characters have been animated to give the film a real sense of the period.

This animation was produced by Made in Tredegar, a film company who operate from a building near the Town Clock. The children were videoed speaking their parts, and an animator created the characters, which show an amazing likeness to members of the Hawks. We are thrilled to have taken part in the project. A big thanks to Kevin, Ben and Jane for inspiring the children and giving us this opportunity.

Deighton Contributes to World Record!!

Over the past couple of days, the children of Deighton Primary School have been working hard to help break a world record! Steven Knapik from the Blue Balloon Charity is attempting to break the world record for the longest landscape! He will be visiting and working with schools all over the world to gather 27,000 landscape drawings! These drawings will then be organised side by side around the Millennium Stadium to create the longest landscape - how exciting that we have been a part of this!!

Holocaust Educational Trust

In preparation for our holocaust visitor testimonial on the 17th of February, the children of Years 5 and 6 were visited by the Holocaust Educational Trust. They carried out some work on Anti-Jewish laws and developed their understanding of subject specific vocabulary related to the holocaust.
Ros, the educator from the Trust, was very impressed with the children's background knowledge and questions!
Da iawn blwyddyn 5 a 6!!

Competition winner - Lowri Molloy

Lowri Molloy was presented with a certificate for the Teen Quest Challenge run at Tredegar Library. Well done Lowri.

Library Visit

The Hawks visited Tredegar Library today and we were lucky enough to meet a man from Tredegar who had an evacuee from World War 2 living with him during the war. He talked about the evacuees story and also offered lots of information about what life was like during the war.
We looked around the museum too.

Cool Crocs visit Tredegar library

The Cool Crocodiles strolled their way down to Tredegar library this morning to hear a fascinating talk by Peter Morgan Jones of Tredegar. Peter lived in Sirhowy during World War 2 and his family took in an evacuee. Peter kindly gave his time up to talk to the children this morning about his experiences and the experiences of the evacuee, whom Peter now refers to as his 'brother.'
Following the talk, the children had time to explore the WW2 artifacts in the museum and spent time learning about the organisation of the library.
A fantastic morning had by all.

"I've learnt so much today." Dylan

"I'm going to go back to the library after school." Harry

"Miss, can we go back to the library soon?" Aaron

Dylan P here!

Our group went canoeing today. I was in a canoe with Harry and Josh L. First we had to put our buoyancy aids on, and then we drove to the canal. We got in our canoes -my canoe was called Titanic. (I hoped we didn't crash!)
We paddled down the canal to a bridge where we did some challenges. I found it quite easy to canoe because Josh was really helping me. We learnt how to turn around in the canoe and go forwards.
We found a forest a have dinner in. We cooked marshmallows on the fire! YUM!
We canoed back to the mini-bus.
I would give this day 10/10. It was phenomenal!

Dylan H and Morgan M here!!

We all worked as a team today, we went hill walking. We saw lots of stuff like mushrooms, ferns and wild ponies. The puffball mushrooms exploded and all seeds came out. We saw a dam (a huge wall keeping water in one place) it was 156ft tall and it was 1790ft above sea level. We saw icicles and it was damp. Many people fell over, as we lost the path and there was lots of hay. We found it difficult to get our feet out. We learnt that to go down a hill safely we need to walk sideways so we don't fall over.
We saw lots of sheep bones, such as skulls.
It went really cold as we stopped for lunch as we weren't moving. Miss showed us an emergency blanket- like a tent to show us how it would keep us warm in an emergency. The hot chocolate warmed us up.
I would give the day 8/10.

Hilston Day 2

Bella here reporting from Hilston Park.

Today was a fabulous day here at Hilston Park. First of all we all went down to the dining room and prepared our packed lunches for the day. Although most of us were awake some still looked like they were half asleep and destroyed from last night’s ghost’s story at 10pm. (Spooky!!!) We were all excited for today's amazing activities!
I was in group B with my friends Libby and Laurie. We all climbed the climbing wall after a couple of attempts.  Then we went down to the cellar to put our kits and back. (E.g. helmets.) After that we came to a door that said NO ENTRY and our instructor Dan walked out with bows and arrows. They looked so cool! We marched to the archery range. Dan showed us how to hold the bow, how we put the arrow on the bow and how we aim and shoot.
We all had tried it out and some of us were really good. Libby was so good she kept on getting a bullseye, then I was getting the hang of it. Dan split us into two teams, I was in the second team. When we was all good at it we had a contest. First I was really bad at the start then I got better and got the high score but on the last round Harry H beat me by two points. Miss Lewis came third.

Well that’s it for now, see you next Monday!!

Bella xx

Hilston 2013

We have all arrived at Hilston and are having a great time. Today we played team building games and fired rockets. It was great. Tea was lovely too!! (As always)
The children are now playing games, which is nice to see, as they are all talking to each other.
Got to go now - want to do our work in the classroom before I'm a celebrity starts.
See you all soon.

A visit to Rodney Parade - Newport Dragons

Kelis Davis said “I thought Sam Parry was excellent! I’m now inspired to be a rugby player. I loved every part of the day.”
Miss Lewis said “It was organised brilliantly. I could enjoy my day without worrying about the children’s behaviour as Mr.James and Mr.Sage had great control. I loved every part of the day! I would recommend the day to all other schools too. I think our children need good role models and local welsh people to inspire them.”
Dylan Prendergast said “Mr.Sage was excellent at the running skills and it was good fun.”
Cory Colling said “I had a great day with Mr James because we learnt a lot and he was really really funny. It made my day.”
Lowri said “Sam Parry said lot of thing like exercise, eat a lot and he got me into rugby. Now I might join myself. I had a great time.”
Tyrhys Lewis said “I loved the stadium and I can’t wait to watch the match! Sam Parry was so cool. Some people say he looked like me!”
Harli Green said “My favourite part of the day was seeing the stadium and how polite every one was who worked there.”
Courtney Edwards said “My favourite part of the day was all of it!”
Ewan Hatherall said “It inspired me re-join rugby and try to be a rugby player.”
Kai Morgan said “I like meeting Sam Parry, he was a good player. My favourite part was when Mr Sage showed us the skills that rugby players do when they train”.

Thursday, 3 October 2013

Hello and Welcome to the new school year. Firstly I would like to say thank you to all the parents of 'The Hawks' for sending all the children in school uniform. It really does make a difference.

Congratulations to our Head boy and Head girl - Jack Wilson and Libby Hubbard and to out Deputy Heads Tyrhys Lewis and Harli Green.

Yesterday 'The Hawks' were lucky enough to visit the Newport Dragons training ground, Rodney Parade, Newport. There we met 2 rugby players, Dan Way and Sam Parry. We interviewed Sam Parry and found out why he loved rugby. We were taken around the ground, and filled with interesting facts by Phil James, the Dragons Educational officer, who was fantastic and made the day very enjoyable. I've never seen the children so mesmerised (well not since Mr Twaite left!). Mike Sage the Dragons Community manager carried out a skills session with the children and talked to us about the fitness of rugby players. We found out that Sam Parry could bench press over 200kg. That was more than me and Miss Whatley at the same time. Wow.
The children have been given free tickets to watch the Dragons on Friday and we cannot wait! This event was sponsored by Tata Steel.
Anyway here's some pictures from our day.

British Gas Training Academy

Class 6 visited the British Gas Training Academy this week where they were told how to be energy efficient. They all behaved fantastically and we all enjoyed the day. (Best part being the dinner)
The children were set a challenge to design and create a new energy efficient device. They all presented their inventions and the best group took home prizes.
Well done to all class 6.
